Experience a unique retelling of one of the most dramatic events in British history- in the city where it all began.
Set against the turbulent backdrop of post- reformation York, The Gunpowder Plot: York’s Untold Story takes visitors beyond the legend of Guy Fawkes to explore the events surrounding 5th November 1605.
Not only does the exhibition take place in the city that many key figures called home, but the story is brought to life within the walls of the Bar Convent, established in the shadows of the plot when the Catholic faith was still illegal.
On display are incredible artefacts including the poignant cross of Edward Oldcorne who was hanged, drawn and quartered in the aftermath of the plot alongside items linked to Margaret Clitherow, whose brutal death is said to have been a pivotal catalyst for the plotters.
Through rare objects, brand-new interpretation and human storytelling, discover how the plot echoed across the country, left its mark on York, and shaped the lives of the courageous women who founded this remarkable house in its wake.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of special events and a new citywide trail.

Join us for an evening to remember, remember as you uncover the real history behind Bonfire Night.
Experience the Bar Convent after-hours, where you will gather by candlelight in the hidden chapel and come face-to-face with York’s most infamous son. Discover the man behind the barrels as Guy Fawkes awaits his fate in the final hour before his execution.
The evening continues in the exhibition with a unique historic retelling of one of the most dramatic events in British history. Set against the turbulent backdrop of post- reformation York, explore the context, conspiracy and consequences of the event surrounding 5th November 1605.
Through rare objects, brand-new interpretation and human storytelling, the exhibition reveals how the plot echoed across the country, left its mark on York, and shaped the lives of the courageous women who founded this remarkable house in its wake.

Wreath Making Workshop At The Bar Convent

Join us for a festive evening of wreath making in the beautiful surroundings of our Atrium.
Led by local florist Joanna Keely (Joanna Keely Flower School), this hands on workshop will guide you through the steps of creating a Christmas wreath to take home. Designed with creativity in mind your arrangement can be hung traditionally on your front door, or used as a festive table centrepiece or Advent ring.
Whether you’re coming with friends or enjoying a festive evening out on your own, it’s the perfect way to start the holiday season.

Date: Wednesday, 3rd December
Time: 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start (approx. 2-hour duration)
Location: The Atrium at The Bar Convent, York
Tickets: £50 per person (includes step-by-step tutorial and all materials)
Refreshments: Alcoholic and soft drinks will be available to purchase on the evening.
